The 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP14 CMS) will be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 12 to 17 February 2024.
Among the topics on the official agenda is “Renewable energy and power lines”, with a specific session, due to the impact that energy infrastructure has or may have on migratory species, especially but not only on birds, and the relevance of good planning of this type of projects and effective impact mitigation measures for the conservation of some endangered species. CMS COP has been addressing the issue of energy and migratory species through various Resolutions: Resolution 7.04 Electrocution of Migratory Birds, for example, instructs the Secretariat to compile information on collision and electrocution of migratory birds; Resolution 10.11 (Rev.COP13) Powerlines and Migratory Birds also instructs the Secretariat to update available information on mitigation of these threats to migratory birds.
In addition, there are several side events that will address issues related to energy infrastructure. We encourage participants to attend them.

The relevance of this issue for the conservation of migratory species is also demonstrated by the existence of a specific working group within CMS, the Energy Task Force (ETF).
As an environmental treaty under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme, CMS provides a global platform for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals and their habitats. CMS brings together the States through which migratory animals pass, the Range States, and lays the legal foundation for internationally coordinated conservation measures throughout a migratory range. CMS complements the work of and cooperates with various international organisations (such as IUCN), NGOs and partners in various sectors, with the aim of ensuring the conservation of these species.
